John Hornsby welcomes Tony Allcock to the Club
“ TONY ALLCOCK MBE. BACK AT OAKHAM “
Keeping a promise made over three years ago Tony Allcock MBE., who won 15 world bowling titles, visited Oakham Bowling Club as part of their centenary programme. He recalled his first visits over 40 years ago when, as a boy, he carried his mothers bowls bag across the Lime Kiln cow fields negotiating the many
natural hazards which included getting over a style. His earliest
memories were of his mother bowling at Oakham in the
Leicestershire County Competitions and he remembered many
of the names of the Oakham players. At the age of seventeen
he was able to play himself and recalled several events including
being beaten by an Oakham bowler – Frank Berridge.
Tony gave his personal view of how the game of bowls should
be played, illustrated by examples of his experience. He has
not bowled competitively since 2002 and is now the Chief
Executive of Bowls England, the ruling body, which is a full
time role, travelling both at home and abroad. This was a
unique experience for members who joined in a question
and answer session.
In the morning semi-final, Oakham played Coalville, and after a slow start, both Oakham rinks found their feet to record wins, by an overall margin of 18 shots.
Semi-final scores:-
Ivan Lang, Gwyn Davies, John Rogers, Chris Wallis Won 28 - 13
Bob Spence, Barrie Payne, Reg Wadsworth, Colin Cambridge Won 21 - 18
The Final in the afternoon, was played against Goodwood, the two surviving teams from an original competition entry of 58 clubs. Again Oakham made a slow start, and after a few end were trailing. However, the rink skipped by Chris Wallis gradually found their form, and went into a substantial lead, eventually winning by 9 shots. The other rink skipped by Colin Cambridge, had a really close match but went down to a solitary shot, resulting in an overall 8 shot win for Oakham.
Final Score:-
Ivan Lang, Gwyn Davies, John Rogers, Chris Wallis won 31 - 22
Bob Spence, Barrie Payne, Reg Wadsworth, Colin Cambridge lost 19 - 20
This has been a very successful competition for Oakham. Over the last 4 years, being winners in 2007, runners up in 2008, and now winners again in our Centenary Year of 2010.
Trophies to be awarded at the Leicestershire Bowling Association Annual Dinner & Presentation Evening on Friday 1st October.
